After Abimelech kills his brothers, the people of Shechem make him king. He is the first Israelite to take this title. (Ironically, his name means “my father is king.”) Yet Gideon himself had declared that neither he nor his son would rule over Israel and that only the LORD would be Israel’s ruler (Judges 8:23). Gideon’s youngest son, Jotham, survived Abimelech’s murderous plot and denounces Abimelech’s actions. In satirical fashion, he tells the men of Shechem a parable that warns against selecting someone to be king who has not been chosen by God.

The Jews are God’s cultivated olive tree, and the new “Gentile” branches have been grafted into the tree which now stands for the whole people of God.

Daily Bible Reading - February 27th, 2022 | American Bible Society: Deuteronomy 6:1-9: The book of Deuteronomy is organized as a series of addresses given by Moses to the people of Israel in the land of Moab, where they had stopped at the end of the long wilderness journey and were about to enter and occupy Canaan. In today’s reading, Moses tells the people that the LORD wants them to obey the laws in the land they are about to occupy so that they may become a strong nation. (You may wish to refer to Deuteronomy 5:1-22 which recounts the Ten Commandments.) Today’s reading includes the great commandment (see verse 5) that Jesus later underscored (see Matthew 22:37; Mark 12:29, 30). Jewish tradition calls verses 4 and 5 the “Shema,” because the first Hebrew word of this passage is “shema,” which means “listen” or “hear.” The Good News Translation renders this word as “remember this!”

Paul reminds the Corinthians once again that he did not ask the Corinthians for monetary support, and his concern now is that, by so doing, he caused the Corinthians to miss out on a blessing.
