Daily Bible Reading - April 24th, 2022 | American Bible Society
Daily Bible Reading - April 24th, 2022 | American Bible Society: Romans 11:1-24: Chapter 11 is a summation of what the apostle Paul has been saying in chapters 9 and 10 about bringing all people—Jews and Gentiles—within the reach of God’s grace in Jesus Christ. Using the image of an olive tree and grafting, Paul argues that Gentiles are like branches that are cut away from a wild olive tree and grafted into a cultivated tree. The Jews are God’s cultivated olive tree, and the new “Gentile” branches have been grafted into the tree which now stands for the whole people of God.

Daily Bible Reading - February 27th, 2022 | American Bible Society: Deuteronomy 6:1-9: The book of Deuteronomy is organized as a series of addresses given by Moses to the people of Israel in the land of Moab, where they had stopped at the end of the long wilderness journey and were about to enter and occupy Canaan. In today’s reading, Moses tells the people that the LORD wants them to obey the laws in the land they are about to occupy so that they may become a strong nation. (You may wish to refer to Deuteronomy 5:1-22 which recounts the Ten Commandments.) Today’s reading includes the great commandment (see verse 5) that Jesus later underscored (see Matthew 22:37; Mark 12:29, 30). Jewish tradition calls verses 4 and 5 the “Shema,” because the first Hebrew word of this passage is “shema,” which means “listen” or “hear.” The Good News Translation renders this word as “remember this!”

Daily Bible Reading - January 30th, 2022 | American Bible Society: 2 Corinthians 12:11-21: Paul speaks of his plans to visit the Corinthians for a third time. His second visit had been a painful one (2 Corinthians 2:1). He mentions that his ability to perform miracles proves that he is a true apostle in comparison to the special “apostles” who had been deceiving the people. Paul reminds the Corinthians once again that he did not ask the Corinthians for monetary support, and his concern now is that, by so doing, he caused the Corinthians to miss out on a blessing. The reading concludes with Paul expressing some fears about what he will encounter when he visits the church in Corinth.

He also discusses Moses, whose face shone with God’s glory. Yet following God’s command, he wore a veil over his face. In contrast, followers of Christ are given the opportunity to reflect God’s glory.

Daily Bible Reading - December 26th, 2021 | American Bible Society: Luke 2:21-52: Today’s reading picks up the storyline from verse 20. Jesus is named and circumcised on the eighth day according to the Law of Moses (see Leviticus 12:3) to indicate belonging to the Lord and as a sign of the covenant God made with Abraham (see Genesis 17:11-12). Mary and Joseph perform the ceremony of purification and bring Jesus to Jerusalem to be dedicated to the Lord. At the Temple, they encounter Simeon and Anna, two elderly and devout people who testify to God’s faithfulness in speaking about Jesus. After completing everything required by the Law, Mary and Joseph return to Nazareth with Jesus. The chapter concludes with the account of Jesus, at age 12, debating with the Jewish teachers in the Temple in Jerusalem.

Daily Bible Reading - December 5th, 2021 | American Bible Society
Daily Bible Reading - December 5th, 2021 | American Bible Society: Isaiah 7:1-25: King Ahaz ruled Judah (southern kingdom) from 735-715 B.C., and King Pekah ruled the northern kingdom of Israel from 752-732 B.C. Between 735 and 732 B.C., Israel and Syria invaded Judah (2 Kings 15:27—16:20; 2 Chronicles 28:1-27). At first Pekah and King Rezin of Syria tried to force Ahaz to join them in their battles against Assyria. When Ahaz didn’t cooperate, Pekah and Rezin tried to replace him with a king who would be friendlier to their purpose (Isaiah 7:6). Isaiah tells Ahaz that the Lord will give him a sign to indicate that God would be with Judah and that there would be no need for Judah to seek an alliance with Assyria. Against Isaiah’s advice, Ahaz turned to Assyria for help; but eventually, Assyria also invaded Judah (2 Kings 18:13-37; 2 Chronicles 32:1-19; Isaiah 8:6-8; 36:1-22). The reading concludes with a description of the Assyrian threat of invasion.
